Dr Sunil Joseph hopes that he can care for his daughter, Sarah-Jane, for as long as possible. Sarah-Jane was diagnosed with autism when she was three. Dr Joseph set up a trust with SNTC with the minimum sum, with the hope that Sarah-Jane will eventually be independent so that he can pass on his money and property to her directly.
Mr Joseph also nominated SNTC as the beneficiary of his insurance policies and as the recipient of proceeds of sales from his properties if she still requires full-time care. Mr Joseph feels that a trust will be an advocate for the child as it provides a check that the money disbursed will be according to what he has planned. He tries to save as much as he can so that his daughter will not be left in the lurch.
Dr Joseph’s story was first published in The Sunday Times in 2011.
