You may have come across the saying, “love can move mountains”. The following is a touching open letter from one of our Case Managers, Ms Diana Lim, in our latest series of “Voices from CMs”.

《An Open Letter to a Caregiver》

This letter has been written from the perspective of SNTC’s Case Manager to highlight about Alice’s concerns about her two nephews with special needs, and the importance of early planning.

Dear Alice,

Are you still feeling helpless like you were a year ago? The beginning of 2020 saw a huge increase in COVID-19 cases, and the “Circuit Breaker” measures in April. During this period, you were not only worried about your health, but the safety of your two nephews with special needs. The younger nephew, Miki, who had his left foot amputated due to diabetes, was just discharged from the hospital and required assistance in activities of daily living. Hence, every day without fail, you would head over to Miki’s home to tidy up his place, prepare meals, as well as accompany him to the hospital for follow-up consultations. On the other hand, although the elder nephew, Tony, could work and earn money, he seems to be clueless about his life, and you were especially worried about his way of spending money.

Both nephews have their respective obstacles to overcome. As time passes and you get on in years, the question that often resides on your mind is, “what would happen to my two nephews upon my demise?”

Thinking of this, you will inevitably feel anxious knowing that your nephews would have to deal with future challenges by themselves. Since their mother passed away due to illness in 2013, you, as an aunt, took over the responsibility of a mother. Your selfless contribution to them comes from the heart. Repeatedly, your nephews managed to overcome their challenges due to your protection and turn danger into a breeze.

In March 2021, you have set up SNTC trust accounts for your two nephews, and subsequently completed your Central Provident Fund (CPF) and insurance nominations to the trust accounts to safeguard the funds for their future living expenses. At last, such an arrangement helps to provide you with peace of mind. Your well-intentioned planning has provided a financial safeguard for their lives in future. Your selfless dedication without asking for anything in return is like the bright sunshine in spring, bringing warmth to your nephews, and this has moved me deeply.

Wishing you good health,

SNTC’s Case Manager, Diana Lim
